When you think of an Eastern Screech-Owl, think of a horse on helium: The little raptor lets out a descending whinny, capped off with a trill. Upon further investigation, there was no need for alarm. Measuring in at just 8 inches, the eastern screech-owl is one of the smallest raptors, second only to the northern saw-whet owl.

In our area, gray birds outnumber red birds by about three-to-one. In general, the bird is a master of vibrato; it uses a monotonic and soothing trill to converse with its kin, too. Screech owls come in two colors: gray (or brownish-gray) and red (actually, orange-red, like a red fox).
